Learning and lineage
Vignesh Ravichandran is a Carnatic vocalist with a Master of Fine Arts (MFA Vocal) degree from Annamalai University. Born and raised in Puducherry, India, Vignesh is a prime disciple of guru Pudhuvai Kalaimamani Dr. V S Balamurali. Dr. Balamurali, disciple of Sri. Puducode Krishnamurthy has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Music at Bharathiar Palkalaikoodam, Puducherry, for more than thirty years. Vignesh is currently receiving advanced training from Sangeet Natak Akademi’s Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar awardee Sri. K S Vishnudev, a disciple of Sri. Chandramana Narayanan Namboothiri and Sri. P. S. Narayanaswamy. He is also currently learning padams and javalis, distinguished styles of compositions known for their emotive and elaborate singing from Smt. Subhashini Parthasarathy of the Veenai Dhanammal lineage.
Collaborations
He was a vital member of the NYC-based Navatman Music Collective (NMC), known for its collaborative approach to Carnatic music. Beyond Carnatic music, from 2014 to 2020. Vignesh collaborates across Arabic, Bulgarian, and Baroque music genres. He frequently collaborates with award-winning Indian dancers and choreographers, including Padmashri Dr. Narthaki Natraj, Praveen Kumar, Kishore Mosalikanti, Maya Chadda Kulkarni and Mythili Prakash
Initiatives
Vignesh also leads KAVI, a cultural house for the arts rooted in Indian classical traditions. Its three wings carry the work: KAVI Sadhana, for classroom teaching, voice culture, theory, and certification preparation; KAVI Arangam, for student and artist performances, original productions, and collaborations; and KAVI Commons, for lec-dems, open mics, and conversation about art.
Literary work
As a talented Tamil writer, Vignesh has garnered critical acclaim for his poetry collection titled “Yen Kirukkalgal”. His poems have been set to music by himself and other musicians, adapted into Carnatic vocal concerts, and incorporated into Bharatanatyam dance productions. He continues to write poetry and compose music for various dance productions, short films, and independent musicians. Vignesh is also recognized for his performances of Indian film music at venues in India and the USA. An experienced educator, Vignesh teaches students both in-person and online in the US and India.
Awards and recognitions
Vignesh has won awards in various state and national-level Carnatic music competitions, including the "Young Talented Child" award from the Government of Puducherry and "Yuva Kala Bharati" from the Yuva Kala Kendra trust in Puducherry. Currently based in New Jersey, Vignesh performs full-length concerts across North America, Canada, and Chennai, earning acclaim from the Carnatic music communities worldwide.
